Inflation calculator: what is money from the past worth today?
In the U.S., $100 in 1990 buys about as much as $240 in 2024. Consumer prices are 2.4 times what they were.
$100 in 1990 ≈ $240 in 2024
What past money is worth in U.S.
How this is calculated
- Value in the later year = amount × (consumer price index in the later year ÷ index in the earlier year). Uses OECD annual average consumer price indexes.
- This shows changes in the general price level only. Prices of individual items (housing, food, wages) moved differently, and it is not an exchange-rate conversion.
- The latest year for U.S. is 2024. For the U.S. and Japan, years after the latest OECD annual average are extended with the national consumer price index (BLS, Statistics Bureau of Japan).
